Growth and Income Distribution in Developing Countries

Finn Tarp

MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: This article analyzes the relationship between growth and income distribution in developing countries. Three important hypotheses are scrutinized: The U-hypothesis, the absolute income hypothesis and the hypothesis of conflict between growth and a more equal income distribution. After a review of theoretical arguments, the empirical evidence is discussed. It is concluded that the existing basis for justifying and testing the hypotheses is highly unsatisfactory.
