THE EFFECT OF TOURISM ON RUPIAH EXCHANGE RATES

Muhammad Nizar

MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: The research objectives are to determine the impact of tourism, which proxied by the number of tourists and tourism receipts, against the exchange rates of Rupiah in Indonesia. This research was conducted using quantitative approaches, namely vector autoregressive (VAR) model and using monthly time series data during 1998:1 – 2011:6. The results showed several conclusions : (i) the growth of tourism (tourism receipts and number of tourists) and exchange rates have reciprocal causal relationship; (ii) the impact of tourism receipts increase will increase (appreciate) the exchange rates (Rupiah) for 3 months, while the increase of tourist numbers will appreciate the exchange rates (Rupiah) for 8 months; (iii) the appreciation (depreciation) of Rupiah will boost the increase (decrease) of tourism receipts and number of tourists in the difference time horizon; (iv) there is a positive relationship and mutual influence between the number of tourists and tourism receipts.
