Data Engineering Applied in SAS: Processing, Organization and Analysis

Moussa Keita

MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: The conduct of any statistical study, whether it is descriptive, exploratory, explanatory or predictive first requires a phase of data processing, organization and structuring. However nowadays with the emergence of Big Data, the practical implementation of these operations is becoming increasingly complex because of the multiplicity and diversity of data sources which are sometimes non-homogeneous. Based on SAS software, this manuscript offers a description of the different stages of data engineering which goes from the collection phase to the analysis phase. This work is organized in four chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the description of the data structuring and data preparation operations in SAS using the tools of the DATA STEP. The second chapter is an extension of the first by introducing the use of SQL language in the data organization phase. The third chapter describe the use of macro-variables and macro-programs in the implementation of complex and repetitive tasks. And finally the fourth chapter presents a detailed description of the various data analysis methods. In each of these chapters, all the concepts covered are supported by concrete applications examples enabling the user to choose among all the proposed methods the one that best meets its concerns. However, since the manuscript still ongoing progress, we remain open to all criticisms and suggestions which would improve its content.
