Effective social result: In search of utility, freedom, justice, and equality
Dimitar Kanev
MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany
Abstract:
The paper analyses main normative views on distribution. By using Edgeworth box diagram and model of the boundary of possible utility it presents the ideas of utilitarians, libertarians, liber-als and socialists. Looking for possible consensus it concludes that the achievement of equality and justice is always at the expense of efficiency and maximizing the general welfare and that the extent to which a decision is socially effective depends on two factors: first, to what extent redistribution reduces the effectiveness, and second, what is the weight of efficiency and equi-ty in achieving the social welfare.
