Abstract:
The objective of this article is to analyze the social cost of unemployment and estimate it for the youth unemployed graduates in Tunisia. We begin by presenting the typology of the social costs of unemployment through a review of the literature. Then, we focus on the Tunisian context and conduct an estimation of the social cost of unemployment for the youth graduates. We use data collected through an original questionnaire targeting the youth graduates having benefited from the government program SIVP. Applying the methodology of Knabe et Rätzel (2007), we show that the social cost of unemployment for this particular category is about four hundred eighteen Tunisian dinars. This result enables us to suggest policy recommendations in order to incentivize not only investment by also enhancing the creation of jobs opportunities to the young graduates.
