Microfinance as a tool for fighting poverty: reflections from ENDA's experience

Abstract: Microfinance is often addressed in the literature as a tool to fight against poverty. Microcredit offers an opportunity to improve the standard of living for people who find it difficult to access the financial system. The purpose of the microfinance market is to occupy the situation of poverty and financial vulnerability around the world. In this perspective, microfinance in Tunisia has been responding for several decades to a permanent need of populations who are excluded from the formal financial system. These populations have other sources of funding than those made available by microfinance institutions. Our research questions the influence and the capacity that microfinance exerts in Tunisia notably for its participation in another mode of development, local and socially sustainable. We will focus on the definition of microfinance, its origins, the factors of its emergence and to study the relationship between microfinance and poverty. Our main concern in this work is to answer the question about the role of microfinance in reducing poverty by first presenting the concept of poverty, its measurement; and then, the study of the impact of microfinance on poverty. We will present the ENDA institution, its financial performance and the impact of its interventions in poverty reduction in the region of Sidi Bouzid. To carry out this work, we adopted a mixed methodology (documentary research and questionnaire surveys)
