Costs and benefits of EU Ascension

Abstract: The subject of this paper is the investigation of the benefits and costs of membership from Eastern European countries to the European Union and the political constraints that result from this cost-benefit analysis. The main conclusion is that it is believed that accession will be beneficial for the enlarged Union as a whole, some countries will obviously benefit more than others. This will be partly because they will maximise the benefits of the EU budget better than others, but also because the economic benefits per se will not be distributed equally among all Member States as well as within the EU. The first part summarises the economic benefits of the accession process and is followed by a rapid identification of costs. The third part looks at the political economy aspects of implementation and highlights the problem areas.
