Emergence and Resurgence of Local Representations in a Context of Socio-economic Change in a Forested Rural Area in Algeria

Abstract: Les crises sociales, économiques et politiques ainsi que les mutations socioéconomiques ont engendré en Kabylie de nouvelles formes de représentations sociales et territoriales et de nouvelles pratiques. À travers l’étude de cas du massif forestier de Béni Ghobri, nous abordons dans cet article les représentations sociales et territoriales des jeunes porteurs de projets. Il s’avère que d’une part, il s’est produit une résurgence de représentations et que d’autre part, sont apparues de nouvelles représentations qui ont entraîné de nouvelles pratiques économiques. Ces dernières permettent de comprendre les nouveaux rapports au territoire, en l’occurrence la forêt, et le devenir des structures sociales, en l’occurrence, la djemaa. Social, economic and political crises and socio-economic change have triggered new forms of social and territorial representations and practices in Kabylia. The article discusses the social and territorial representations of young project promoters in the Beni Ghobri forest. The case study shows that there has been a resurgence of representations while a new kind of representations emerged, leading to new economic practices. These practices allow us to understand the new relationships to the territory, in this case the forest, and the future of social structures, namely the djemaa.
