Abstract:
The goal of this project is to understand whether differences in sorting patterns over life cycle documented in Borovickova and Shimer (2017) can help us understand the gender wage gap. I study a structural model of life cycle sorting and quantitatively evaluate the contribution of sorting differences to the gender wage gap. When wages are supermodular in worker and firm types, a gender wage gap emerges between better-sorted men and less-well sorted women. Structurally estimating the model will allow me to study a variety of labor market policies, including family leave and provision of childcare services.
