Entrepreneurship differs according to the territories and their history. Our aim is to link the history of the studied area with its actors (the entrepreneur). During the 19th century, Dunkirk has become the third French port. Since this period, the entrepreneur has no more been considered as a «charlatan» but as a man with a function of social usefulness. But who are these entrepreneurs ? How do they start their business ? What are their characteristics ? The historical analysis is combined in this paper with the concept of the social capital of entrepreneurs.
