Abstract:
The Le Chapelier Law is the law which not only abolished guilds, but also ushered in workers’ rights to create trade unions or to go on strike. The law was voted through quickly, almost without debate, and against negligible opposition. Why was this law, which brought long-term changes to labour organization in France (and also improved the lot of the working classes), voted so rapidly and so easily? The aim of this paper is to provide an explanation of the balance of power between the different social classes in a climate of political unrest (the French Revolution) which was also characterized by thestart of industrialization
