No 21-3, Industrial Economic Review from Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade

Abstract: The display industry includes technologies and products such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs), organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), flexible displays, transparent displays, 3D displays, and micro LEDs, among others. The display industry (along with the semiconductor industry) drives the development of the electronic information industry and plays an important role in future economic growth. In 2018, China ranked first in the world in the global LCD market, beating Korea for the first time. Korea still dominates in the global OLED market, but with the support of the Chinese government the focus of the development of the Chinese display industry is gradually shifting from LCD to OLED displays. This study explores the ways in which China fosters its display industry through both the injection of enormous subsidies and the implementation of promotion policies by the government level.
