Abstract:
An online export market is growing rapidly around the world. Global consulting agencies estimate that the cross-border e-commerce market reached 578.5 billion USD in 2019 and will continue to record breakneck growth, potentially reaching 4.8 trillion USD by 2026. Driving this rapid growth is the development of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies. The purpose of this study is to analyze strategic and policy issues for strengthening Korea’s status as an export powerhouse and improving SMEs’ online export competence. After identifying relevant strategic and policy issues through a review of the existing literature, this paper analyzes those issues from an SME perspective. Configuring and coordinating an online export policy tailored to SMEs is the most important challenge facing policy authorities. To help the government better understand SMEs’ needs, this paper aims to clarify the discriminatory characteristics of SMEs online exports, and proposes policies for activating SME online exports. The study surveyed Korean SMEs engages in online export activities to investigate research issues in October 2020.1 The paper is expected to contribute not only to the expansion of online exports but also to the creation of an environment that facilitates sustainable online exports for Korean SMEs.
