No 15-2013, TD NEREUS from Núcleo de Economia Regional e Urbana da Universidade de São Paulo (NEREUS)

Abstract: The study of inter-regional interdependence among municipalities is a key point in the analysis of regional and urban planning. Thus, this paper aims to explore the nature and the degree of economic interdependence among the municipalities of the Sao Paulo metropolitan area (SPMA). The SPMA is formed by 39 municipalities. We will use an input-output approach to deal with this topic. More specifically we will use the Miyazawa multiplier approach. The database is an inter-regional input-output matrix calibrated for 2008 with 56 productive sectors and 41 regions (31 municipalities, the rest of the Sao Paulo state and the rest of Brazil). The input-output matrix used in this paper enables us to have a complete picture of the spatial aspects inherent to the productive and trade structure of the metropolitan area.
