Abstract:
The present paper presents a brief review of the challenges that the higher education system is facing in this decade of major transformations. In the context of the Bologna Process which focuses on the reformation of education, the Lisbon Strategy represents the biggest challenge for the European university by requesting them to become part of the knowledge based economy and society. The Declaration from Prague elaborated after the 5th Convention of the European University Association (EUA) recommends to the political leaders the overcoming of the global economical crisis by increasing the investment in the higher education and in the research area, as they are the crucial factors for the development of the society. The conclusion of the paper is that in the actual context the main role of the educational system is to teach the students „the art of learning”, encouraging them to contribute with their creativity and innovation to the development of a strong knowledge based European society.
