Abstract:
The essay analyses the narcissism in Philip Roth’s novel, „My life as a man”, but also offers a general psychoanalytical view upon it. The character’s ego is narcissistic because it destroys everything around him, his relathionships have a pathological base and we seek the roots of his choices in his childhood, as we admitt that the mature psychic is the product of the libido’s history. Overanalysing every drawer of his mind is a sign of his obsessional neurosis and through these confessions we find the path to his unconscious. This is the work where the author exposes him the most, as we find here many elements of his biography.
