Abstract: Research has shown that therapy that includes homework improves outcome. This is likely because homework takes advantage of time available between therapy session, allows the client to practice concepts learned in therapy, and helps the client be an active participant in the change process. Unfortunately, approximately one third of clients do not complete homework assignments. Because increasing adherence improves outcome, methods that increase adherence are extremely important. The following are the main considerations for designing and assigning effective homework: - Form a strong bond with the client through effective use of reflective listening, empathy, respect, and genuineness. - Achieve goal consensus with the client. - Respect the client’s level for readiness to change. - Achieve task consensus. - Make assignments smalll and relatively simple at first. - Build assignments on clients’ strenghts. - Make assignments „well formed”. - If necessary, practice the homework in session and write down specifics for the clients.
