Abstract:
The anxiety response can be very useful in the short term to deal with threatening, dangerous or stressful situations. Defined as a normal feeling that people experience when they are faceing such situations, anxiety can be counterproductive to the individual if this reaction does not subside when the threat passes, or is exaggerated. Problems with a high level of anxiety involving unrealistic fear are very common, and frequently patients require help-therapy in order to go beyond anxiety disorders. Often the patient experience an uncontrollable panic response to ordinary, nonthreatening situations. Is a panic attack. If the person experiences recurrent panic attacks, in combination with significant behavioral change or at least a month of ongoing worry about the implications or concern about having other attacks, is said to have panic disorder.(DSM-IV) Most specialists agree that cognitive behavioral therapy is the best treatment for panic disorder. Medication might also be appropriate in some cases. First part of therapy is informational, many people are helped by simply understanding what the panic disorder is. Second step is cognitive restructuring, changing the way of thinking, that helps people to replace negative thoughts with more realistic, positive ways of viewing the panic attacks. Cognitive restructuring is followed by vivo exposure, which means breaking down a fearful situation into small steps and doing them one at a time until the most difficult level is controlled. For positive results, cognitive behavioral therapy introduces in therapeutic demarche some relaxation techniques that can help the client to get over an panic attack. These techniques include breathing exercises and positive visualization.
