Abstract: The therapeutic value of music was recognized and used from ancient times. In the present, scientists are studying the psychological and physiological effects of music, in order to determine the scientist bases of using the music therapy in medical field. This paper presents actual information about the psychological effects of music, namely: relaxation, fatigue eliminating, stimulation of attention, memory, imagination and creativity, increasing performances at cognitive tests, improving language, emotional equilibration, improving communication and diminution of interior and interpersonal tensions. Having this psychological impact, the music plays an important role in personal development and in individual adaptation, being use in cultural, social, educational and therapeutic purposes. Music therapy has many applications in psychiatry, especially in developmental, behavioral and emotional disorders of children, in neurosis and psychosis (residual forms) of adults and dementia of elderly people. The utility of music therapy in psychiatric disorders is proved by recent experimental and epidemiological evidences.
