Abstract: This preprint considers the problem of sources of demographic data on communities of a traditional way of life, that is, societies in which rigid generational and gender hierarchies operate. Existing studies show that when collecting information in such communities, both in the context of population censuses and in conducting sample surveys, there are specific factors leading to data distortion. In this regard, this paper compares the relative reliability of official statistics and sample surveys on demographic processes in traditional communities, and draws conclusions about the practical possibilities of using both sources of information.
