Abstract: The paper addresses the actual issues of the global education, especially related to the tertiary education in the specific knowledge economy framework. The analysis summarises the results of two research projects developed and implemented in the "Dimitrie Cantemir" Christian University, financed through the national research budget. The challenges of the global knowledge economy creates the premises to design new educational and proffesional paths, according to the global markets needs. In this context a new profile for the global citizen should be designed, integrating a wide set of transversal competences. Moreover, a continuous educational process should be considered, as a realistic perspective in the learning society. The main objective of the analysis stands for emphasising the role of the tertiary education as an important asset for the smart growth. The universities become poles of knowledge, creativity and innovation and have a major contribution to the sustainable development and the raise of the competitiveness level. In this context, the competition in the educational field becomes more evident and the brain drain processes more frequent. The paper aims at highlighting actual issues analysed in a quantitative and qualitative perspective. The methodological approach integrates various methods and tools, such as: desk research, statistical data analysis and benchmarkings.
