Studii Economice from Institutul National de Cercetari Economice (INCE)

Abstract: Tempering the socio-economic effects of Covid-19 pandemic required the engagement of large-scale public spending, especially for healthcare and social protection. Expenditures incurred by european governments were limited both by the financial possibilities and the budgetary constraints of each state. This study analyzes in detail the dynamics and structure of public social spending, on their three components - health, social protection and education - in the period 2019-2022. For each of these sectors, we will analyze the growth rates of real public expenditures, and the levels of spending per inhabitant, expressed at purchasing power parity. We will also study the evolution of expenditures in these sectors, by destination: consumption, compensation of employees, social transfers and investments.
