The impact of international trade on employment and wage differentials: same evidence from the italian macro-regions

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to gain insigt into the potential impact produced by a growing international integration on the labor market of economies experiencing different stages of development. The first part provides a review of the economists' debate about the impact of international trade on employment and wages. More to the point, a comparison is made of the experiences of the United States, Europe and LDCs. An empirical analysis of the case of Italy follows, with a focus on the different relationships between international trade and the labor market in the three Italian macro-regions (Northern, Central and Southern Italy).
