History Revisited: Narratives on Political and Constitutional Changes in Kashmir (1947 -1990)

Abstract: One of the main conflicts prevailing in South Asia today is that of the row over Kashmir. The long history of the conflict, the states involved in the conflict and its geo-political position has always placed it in the forefront of discussion both at the regional and international level. In order to understand the present situation it is important to engage in historical analysis. The selective facts chosen by the historians from both India and Pakistan and to some extent by Kashmiri scholars, gives an incomplete picture of the conflict. There is a need not only to follow the chronology of different political events but also to look at the debates and narratives on these events. This paper will attempt to look at different narratives of the history of the political and constitutional changes in Kashmir, between 1947 and 1990.
