Productivity in the Forest Products Sector: A Review of the Literature

Centre for the Study of Living Standards

No 2003-02, CSLS Research Reports from Centre for the Study of Living Standards

Abstract: This report reviews and synthesizes the empirical literature on productivity levels and trends in the forest products sector, with a focus on English-language studies from Canada and the United States. It covers general studies of the overall forest sector and sub-sector studies on logging, saw milling/lumber/wood products, and pulp and paper. For each sub-sector, Canadian studies and international comparisons are summarized and major findings synthesized. The review describes both index number and econometric approaches to productivity measurement as applied in the forest products literature.
