Abstract: This report, originally published by the Bertelsmann Foundation as part of the Sustainable Governance Indicators project, assesses the quality of governance in Canada from May 2011 to May 2013. The report evaluates policy performance and democratic quality across a range of domains including economic policy, social policy, environmental policy, and rule of law. It finds that while Canada has high-quality governance structures, several actions of the Conservative government — including changes to environmental legislation, the replacement of the mandatory census long form, and tensions with the Parliamentary Budget Office — represent a deterioration in sustainable governance.
