Indigenous Recruitment, Retention and Community Outreach in the Canadian Natural Resource Sector

Nicole Johnston and James Ashwell

No 2018-01, CSLS Research Reports from Centre for the Study of Living Standards

Abstract: The objective of this report is to highlight best practices for resource industry engagement with Indigenous stakeholder communities. This report reviews relevant literature and draws on successful examples of community engagement to provide information on best practices for recruitment and retention of Indigenous workers, as well as for creating partnerships in health, education and culture. In general, respecting cultural differences and consulting closely with local communities to understand their particular history, culture, needs and goals will help to build lasting and mutually beneficial relationships between resource companies and Indigenous communities.
