Abstract:
During the economic recovery observed in Argentina since 2003 has occurred an evident reduction of unemployment in general and youth unemployment in particular. The unemployment rate for all ages fell from 15% in 2003 to 7% in 2011. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate of young people between 18 to 24 years old fell from 30% to 18% between those years. However, nearly 9 years of recovery, still remain significant gaps between groups defined by age, gender and educational level, among other socio-demographic variables critical to public policy. Perhaps the most important of these gaps is that between youth and adults in central ages, which is analyzed in this paper. Using data from the Household Survey for the period 2003-2011, we examine the evolution and level of traditional indicators of labor market (labor force participation, employment and unemployment) and perform a multivariate analysis to examine the factors related to both the level of youth unemployment and its change between 2003/2004 and 2010/2011. The factors determining the change in the rate of youth unemployment are grouped into those for the own young (age, gender, education and school attendance), their family (mainly socio-economic level), and geographical environment of the household that lives (region of residence). Are tested several hypotheses related to state dependency, that is, how the educational situation and recent work, impact on youth unemployment.
