A paradigm shift for decision-making in an era of deep and extended changes

Mauro Lombardi and Simone Vannuccini

SPRU Working Paper Series from SPRU - Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex Business School

Abstract: The complex interaction of contemporary techno- and socio-economic processes has set the stage for the emergence of a cyber-physical universe – the novel environment in which agents behave and interact. In this paper, we collect the different threads that lead to and characterize the cyber-physical world in a single analysis and outline a map of the complex dynamics at work in the new context. The resulting description is used to assess how decision-making should evolve in order to be able to address in a systemic manner the opportunities and challenges of the current era of deep and extended changes.
