Abstract:
An important policy issue with respect to small firms is whether such firms require support in accessing technologies and technological knowledge outside the firm. This paper is a statistical study of technology acquisition by Norwegian firms. It looks at two basic issues: are there important differences between small firms and large firms in the extent to which they acquire outside technologies? are there differences between small firms and large firms in terms of the types of 'channels' through which technology is acquired? These questions relate to two policy issues. Firstly, is there a case for the view that small firms need support in acquiring outside technologies? Secondly, are there particular channels of support which might need to be strengthened for small firms?
