Abstract:
Spatial planning concepts are increasingly prominent in discussions and strategies focusing on regional and rural development. This paper places Ireland’s National Spatial Strategy within an EU context through a brief review of the literature discussing and assessing the European Spatial Development Perspective published in 1999. The application of core concepts contained in this document within the National Spatial Strategy is reviewed. Analysis of travel-to-work data from the 2006 Census of Population is undertaken identifying the spatial extent of the hinterlands surrounding the Gateways, Hubs and Other Towns established within the NSS. Statistical analysis indicates that there are extensive areas that are not strongly linked, economically, with these towns and cities.
