Abstract: The paper analyses determinants of poverty dynamics in urban and rural areas in transitional Russia, using micro data of the RLMS (1994-2000). It aims to identify the differences between characteristics of poverty dynamics in urban and rural areas during the period. The results of the analysis show that there are more channels for alleviating poverty in urban areas than in rural areas. The paper reveals that the lack of channels in rural areas could delay speed of poverty reduction and make autonomous alleviation of poverty more difficult in rural areas.
