Abstract: Foreign direct investment played a vital role in the economic transformation of the Central and Eastern European countries. It was also a crucial factor in the modernisation of Spain after its accession to the EU. This paper gives an overview on the development of foreign direct investment in the Central and Eastern European countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania) compared to Spain. The characteristics of FDI inflow and outflow are shown separating three periods since 1995. Afterwards certain main effects of FDI on the host economies are briefly mentioned.
