Abstract:
In this paper we address the relationship between competitiveness and labor costs. We focus on EU-27 countries over the period 1995-2009. We test the orthodox hypothesis that links exports share growth and the improvement of high tech sectors, with wage containment, finding no evidence on that link. In addition, the article considers the linkages between competitiveness, incomes policies and income distribution. We analyze how the increase of profit share has not entailed an increase of gross capital formation and competitiveness.
