Abstract:
This paper presents a contribution towards the development of the principles of the geo-ecological ranking and zoning. Geoecological zoning of the water areas is necessary for the detailed and timely monitoring of the environmental status of the marine ecosystems. However, in contrast to the land mapping, the principles of zoning of the seas are very different. Besides, there is still no generally accepted principles and scientific approaches to this problem. This paper suggests a methodology for the environmental data mining and information storage aimed at zoning of the marine areas using GIS. As a result of the study, a risk assessment was proposed with a case study of Barents Sea. The area of the Barents Sea has been divided into several zones showing degrees of crisis caused by global and regional environmental changes.
