Abstract: The 2011 Report examines the status of industrial development in Africa and analyses its importance for economic growth, employment creation and poverty reduction. It reviews the performance of the manufacturing sector, identifies structural characteristics of industrial development in African economies and assesses lessons from past industrialization efforts. Particular attention is given to the changing global environment, including evolving trade rules, international production networks, emerging industrial powers and environmental challenges. The Report argues that industrialization remains central to structural transformation and evaluates policy approaches that can strengthen productive capacities and competitiveness. It discusses the roles of innovation, entrepreneurship, technological development, domestic linkages and effective institutions in supporting industrial growth. The analysis identifies policy priorities for designing and implementing industrial strategies tailored to the specific circumstances and development objectives of African countries.
