Abstract: The 2012 Report examines the relationship between structural transformation and sustainable development in Africa. It analyses how economic transformation can improve living standards while addressing environmental challenges associated with increased resource use, industrialization and population growth. The Report introduces the concept of sustainable structural transformation and evaluates strategies for enhancing resource productivity, reducing environmental pressures and promoting long-term development. It provides evidence on patterns of resource use and efficiency across African economies and assesses the implications for future growth trajectories. Particular attention is given to the roles of industrial policy, energy access, technological change and agricultural development in supporting environmentally sustainable growth. The analysis identifies policy measures that can strengthen economic transformation while maintaining environmental sustainability and improving development outcomes.
