Abstract: The 2001 Report reviews recent developments in world maritime transport and international trade, focusing on the performance of maritime industries in developing countries and trends affecting global shipping markets. It analyses changes in cargo volumes, merchant fleet composition, port activity and shipping services, and assesses the relationship between maritime transport and economic growth. The Report includes a regional assessment of East Asia, China and Japan, examining trade expansion, transport networks and fleet modernization in the region. Particular attention is given to the growing role of Asian economies in international shipping and logistics. The analysis highlights factors supporting competitiveness in maritime transport, including fleet efficiency, trade integration and investment in transport infrastructure. Extensive statistical information is provided to support policy analysis and long-term trend assessment.
