Abstract: The 2002 Report provides a comprehensive review of developments in world seaborne trade, fleet capacity, freight markets, ports and transport infrastructure. It analyses recent changes in shipping demand and supply and evaluates their implications for maritime transport performance and efficiency. Particular attention is given to developments affecting developing countries and their participation in global maritime commerce. The Report examines trends in fleet productivity, containerization, port throughput and maritime transport services, drawing on long-term statistical series to place recent developments in historical perspective. It also assesses changes in freight markets and transport costs and considers their implications for international trade. The analysis provides a statistical and analytical foundation for evaluating the evolving role of maritime transport in the global economy.
