Abstract: The 2009 Report reviews developments in maritime transport and related logistics systems during a period marked by significant disruptions in the global economy and international trade. It analyses trends in seaborne trade, shipping markets, fleet capacity, freight movements and port activity and assesses their implications for developing countries. A special focus is given to Africa, examining regional trade patterns, maritime transport services and infrastructure performance. The Report evaluates the impact of global economic conditions on transport demand and explores developments in container shipping, bulk trades, freight rates and multimodal transport systems. It also reviews legal and regulatory issues affecting maritime transport and provides extensive statistical information on shipping and trade performance. The analysis highlights key factors influencing maritime connectivity, competitiveness and economic integration.
