Abstract: The 2012 Report examines the relationship between income distribution, growth and development in a context of slowing global economic activity. It analyses trends in inequality across developed and developing economies and assesses how changes in income distribution affect domestic demand, employment and long-term growth prospects. Particular attention is given to the interaction between globalization, technological change, financialization and labour market outcomes. The Report evaluates empirical evidence on the links between inequality and economic performance and argues that rising inequality is neither inevitable nor beneficial for growth. It also considers the roles of wage policies, social protection systems, labour market institutions and macroeconomic management in supporting more equitable development. The analysis highlights policy approaches that can promote inclusive growth while strengthening economic resilience and social cohesion.
