Abstract: The 2018 Report examines the opportunities and challenges associated with frontier technologies and their implications for sustainable development. It analyses emerging technologies, including digital platforms, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and other rapidly evolving innovations, and assesses their potential contribution to productivity growth and economic transformation. Particular attention is given to the risks that technological change may increase inequalities within and between countries if technological capabilities remain unevenly distributed. The Report evaluates policy options for strengthening technological readiness, expanding digital capabilities and supporting inclusive innovation. It also considers the implications of technological disruption for labour markets, education systems and social protection policies. The analysis highlights strategies for enabling developing countries to benefit from frontier technologies while supporting equitable and sustainable development.
