World Investment Report 2009: Transnational Corporations, Agricultural Production and Development
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
No 19, World Investment Report from United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
Abstract:
The 2009 Report examines the relationship between foreign direct investment, agricultural production and development in the context of the global financial and economic crisis. It analyses trends in international investment flows and evaluates how changing economic conditions have affected investment patterns across regions and sectors. Particular attention is given to agriculture and agribusiness, including the role of transnational corporations in production, processing and international supply chains. The Report considers the opportunities and risks associated with increased investment in agriculture, including its implications for food security, rural development, technology transfer and productivity growth. It also assesses the effects of the crisis on investment behaviour, investment policies and different modes of international production. The analysis identifies policy considerations for ensuring that agricultural investment contributes to sustainable development and broad-based economic progress.
