Abstract: The 2012 Report examines the evolving role of investment policy in supporting sustainable development objectives. It reviews recent trends in foreign direct investment and analyses how changing economic conditions have affected global investment patterns. Particular attention is given to the challenges of designing investment frameworks that balance investor interests with broader development, social and environmental goals. The Report evaluates national investment strategies, international investment agreements and emerging policy approaches aimed at strengthening the development impact of investment. It introduces principles and policy guidance for aligning investment governance with sustainable development priorities and considers the implications of increasing complexity in the international investment regime. The analysis highlights the need for coherent and balanced investment policies that support long-term economic growth while addressing social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
