Abstract: The 2013 Report analyses the relationship between foreign direct investment, global value chains and economic development. It examines how international production networks shape trade patterns, investment flows and industrial development across developed and developing economies. Particular attention is given to the opportunities and risks associated with participation in global value chains, including their effects on employment, productivity, technology transfer and economic upgrading. The Report evaluates policy options for increasing the developmental benefits of integration into international production systems while mitigating potential vulnerabilities. It also reviews recent trends in investment and international production and assesses the growing role of developing economies as recipients and sources of foreign direct investment. The analysis provides guidance for policymakers seeking to strengthen productive capacities and enhance the contribution of global value chains to sustainable development.
