Abstract: The 2014 Report examines the role of investment in financing sustainable development and evaluates the contribution of foreign direct investment to achieving emerging sustainable development objectives. It analyses trends in international investment flows and identifies financing gaps in key sectors, including infrastructure, energy, water, agriculture, health and education. Particular attention is given to investment needs in developing and vulnerable economies and to the policy measures required to mobilize additional resources. The Report evaluates the role of private-sector investment, transnational corporations and public policy frameworks in supporting sustainable development outcomes. It also presents options for enhancing the economic, social and environmental contributions of investment while strengthening coherence between national and international investment policies. The analysis highlights strategies for directing investment towards sectors that are critical for long-term sustainable development.
