Investing in social protection floors

Daniel Jeongdae Lee and Dyah Pritadrajati

No PB83, MPDD Policy Briefs from United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)

Abstract: One of the interventions costed in ESCAP’s Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2019: Ambitions beyond growth is social protection floors, to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 1 of ending poverty in all its forms everywhere. Despite progress, the Asia-Pacific region remains home to some 400 million people living in extreme poverty and to at least 931 million people in conditions of multidimensional poverty (ESCAP, ADB and UNDP, 2017). This policy brief examines the cost estimates for providing basic income security to people.
