Growing Through Deregulation: A Study of China's Telecommunications Industry

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of the current situations and reforms in China's telecommunications sector. It particularly focuses on the service areas. The main issues addressed in clude recent growth, organisational structure and reforms, key players and competition, ownership and growth prospects. It is found that growth in telecommunications services has been fuelled by the burgeoning demand associated with China's recent economic boom. This growth is further boosted by the structural reforms and deregulation in the telecommunications sector. The provision of services in most areas is now deregulated internally. But, foreign participation is still limited. It is speculated that further deregulation will take place due to China's pending WTO membership and rising consumer demand. Thus, the current momentum of growth will continue in the Chinese telecommunications sector.
