Tourism, marketing and telecommuniction: a road towards regional development

Peter Nijkamp

No 28, Serie Research Memoranda from VU University Amsterdam, Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Econometrics

Abstract: Starting from the concept of a global tourist village, this paper highlights the rapidly increasing role of international tourism in sustainable development. The paper argues that a balance has to be found between economic growth and ecological preservation of tourist areas. The level of tourist expenditures is to be evaluated against the social costs of the sector concerned. The paper offers also some numerical results on a meta-analytical experiment on tourist income multipliers in various tourist areas.
