Decentralizing Demonstration to Accelerate Learning in Agriculture

Abstract: In a field experiment, farmers learn about a new flood-saline-resilient seed from a single, centralized demonstration plot in some Bangladeshi villages, while the same demonstration kit is shared by multiple farmers in other villages. The decentralized modality allows more farmers to experience the technology for themselves or through their near-neighbors, and increases adoption one year after demonstration, especially in flood-affected villages where the benefits of adoption are concentrated and observed. The effects of decentralizing demonstration disappear two years after demonstration. Adoption and subsequent disadoption patterns are consistent with decentralized demonstration accelerating learning the returns of a customized technology.
